Supporting peacekeeping missions and delivering aid with I-Master
Aid workers have reported that over 150,000 people are at risk of famine.
The civil war that has raged in the country for a number of years means that there has been a shortage of food, electricity, water and medical supplies for a prolonged period of time.
The situation has reached crisis point and aid workers have called for military support.
Red Forces are still in operation in the area and the colossal damage to local infrastructure makes travelling around the country extremely dangerous. Getting aid to those in need will be an extremely difficult task.
Fortunately, Blue Forces have Thales’s airborne surveillance radar, I-Master, which has the ability to map terrain using its Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mode.
I-Master provides accurate real-time, high-resolution ground mapping of more than 1000 km2 of terrain per hour. This enables operations to identify hazards which could be dangerous to pass.
By comparing SAR images of the same area taken at different times, it is possible to automatically highlight subtle changes that have taken place in between times. For example, new encampments, broken bridges, temporary barriers, and the arrival and departure of vehicles.
Ground Moving Target Indication mode also enables moving targets to be identified, from foot patrols to fast-moving vehicles, which will enable countermeasures to be put in place should the opposition launch an attack.
The intelligence enables aid workers to safely travel across the country so that they can deliver vital supplies such as food, medicines and fresh water without harm.
