TAS-E participates in project “DEWI - Dependable Embedded Wireless Infrastructure” under ARTEMIS program, co-financed by EC and Spanish MINETUR
Madrid, 15/04/2014 – ARTEMIS JU has recently decided to award a financial support to the project “DEWI - Dependable Embedded Wireless Infrastructure”, in the frame of ARTEMIS program, presented to the 2013 call of proposals.
Today, wireless communication has found its way into the homes of almost all citizens. Embedded devices like mobile phones, WLAN routers, high speed home entertainment connections or navigation systems are common items in everybody’s life. It is evident that the presence of this wireless technology has significantly relieved the lives of mobile citizens – through connectivity.

But wireless connections (particularly short-ranged) can reach far beyond the connectivity needs of citizens – it can increase the level of flexibility in its environment whilst, the dominant technology is still a wired technology. For example new cars and buildings are equipped with traditional cabling for installation and lighting. This is because current wireless technologies for that purpose still lack features like composability, dependability, security, safety, privacy and auto-configuration. Furthermore, current solutions do not have a common reference design and service-oriented architecture that would be needed to build a market environment where competition enables lower prices.
DEWI will provide key solutions for wireless communication in smart cities and infrastructures by considering everyday physical environments of citizens in buildings, cars, trains as well as airplanes, and beyond. DEWI will exploit domain-specific insights into embedded wireless system design to investigate and establish cross-domain synergies. Consequently, currently fragmented research results will be integrated into a harmonized architecture for dependable, safe, and secure wireless systems development. This will extend existing domain-specific and domain-independent standards.
As a large and strategic initiative, DEWI gathers and connects main European players regarding embedded systems engineering in the areas of Aeronautics (on-board and ground systems), Automotive (on-board systems and critical infrastructure around vehicles), Rail (on-board and maintenance systems), and Building. Each of the areas will be represented by a critical mass of European technology providers to achieve both societal impact regarding future safer transport and building and technological advances in terms of cross-domain platform-based reusability. DEWI achieves cross-sectori reusability of embedded systems devices and architecture platforms that ensures maximum effective use of the available budgets.
DEWI identifies and implements an integrated dependable service oriented and adaptable communication architecture using wireless networking technology capable of replacing the traditional heavy wiring between computers / devices / sensors, and therefore makes possible less expensive and more flexible remote maintenance and re-configuration. Citizens will gain easier, more comfortable, more transparent and safer access to information provided by the “sensor & communication bubble”. The core technological development of the “sensor & communication bubble” will be demonstrated in order to achieve the empirical validation expected.
The overall project goal of DEWI is to foster Europe’s leading edge position in the design, development, and deployment of smart dependable wireless environments in particular regarding quality, cost effectiveness, composability, flexibility, reusability, acceleration of time to market, continuous integration of innovations, and sustainability.
In the RF domain, TASE will take part in the Aerospace demonstrator of DEWI. This demonstrator is aimed at showing the feasibility of on board data handling and sensor networks implemented using wireless technologies and showing enough robustness to operate under the stringent aeronautic and space requirements. TASE will be in charge of developing a bridge TT&C unit that will interface between the internal network data and sensor network and the ground control center. This demonstrator will be flight tested in a polish test launcher provided by the company Space Forest.
The ARTEMIS JTI is implemented as a Joint Undertaking (JU) which is a public-private partnership between the European Commission, the ARTEMIS Member States and the ARTEMIS Industry Association. This Association represents the research community, including Industry (large, small and medium sized companies), universities and research institutes. ARTEMIS-IA members define and maintain the strategic, technical work plan on behalf of ARTEMIS-JU, for implementation in ARTEMIS-JU funded projects. ARTEMIS aims to tackle the research and structural challenges faced by European industry by defining and implementing a coherent Research Agenda for Embedded Computing Systems. The ARTEMIS JU manages and co-ordinates research activities through open calls for proposals through a 10-year, €2.5 billion research programe on Embedded Computing Systems.
