Thales celebrates launch of first large vessel under the National Shipbuilding Strategy
On December 8, 2017 Thales Canada celebrated the launch of the first Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel (OFSV) at Seaspan Shipyards. This first of class vessel represents a remarkable achievement as the first large non-combat ship to be designed and built under Canada鈥檚 National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), demonstrating the domestic shipbuilding industry鈥檚 strength and capabilities.
The NSS enables Thales Canada to make significant investments in its people, processes, and facilities, supporting the creation of 80 highly skilled jobs in Ottawa, Vancouver and Victoria.
Thales is proud to participate in the National Shipbuilding Strategy and ensure the integration of the electronic systems for the navigation, communications and mission systems of this non-combat ship. In addition, Thales is responsible for the assembly and integration of the bridge of the OFSV that will be relied upon by the Canadian Coast Guard, its scientists and researchers to better understand our maritime environment,鈥 said Mark Halinaty, President & CEO of Thales Canada.
Seaspan relies on Thales as a Tier 1 partner for the selection, procurement and integration of the electronic systems and equipment onboard the vessels being constructed in Vancouver. The OFSV demonstrates the integration of Thales鈥 unique capabilities with equipment procured from seven different provinces across the country, Thales supports Seaspan in building a modern, specialized science vessel for the Canadian Coast Guard.
